Philips Sonicare Essence 5300/HX5351 Review

Philips HX5351 SonicareYou’ve probably noticed that there are a huge number of electric toothbrushes on the market. If you’re big on oral hygiene like me, you’re probably going to want to get a great electric toothbrush that is also easy on the wallet. Luckily, I’ve found was is possibly the greatest value for the money in the Philips Sonicare Essence 5300 electric toothbrush. Coming in at a fraction of the price of many of the other electric toothbrushes on the market, it’s no wonder this is the best-selling electric toothbrush on

Philips Sonicare Essence 5300/HX5351 Product Overview

  • Soft grip handle and holds charge for up to 2 weeks, which is great for travel
  • Removes 80% of coffee and tobacco stains in just 28 days
  • Two-minute smart timer to make sure you brush adequately
  • Includes charger base and travel case
  • Comes with 1 contoured brush head (more available inexpensively)

First of all, as I mentioned, this is likely the best value you’re going to find in a quality electric toothbrush. While you can opt for a higher-end model, the premium you’re paying for is for bells-and-whistles that you’ll probably never use. Also, although you can go to a grocery or pharmacy and buy a cheapo electric toothbrush, you’re not going to get something that will clean your teeth properly. Oral health is a very important thing, and you want to get a toothbrush that will do a proper job. The Sonicare Essence 5300 toothbrush is a great value.

Other reviews I’ve read online suggest that their Sonicare Essence 5300 has lasted over 4 years working almost as good as new, with the only issue being a lesser-lasting battery charge. That’s pretty impressive for such an affordable electric toothbrush, if you ask me.

How Well Does The Philips Sonicare Essence 5300 Work?

Philips HX5351 Sonicare Vibration

Philips Sonicare Essence 5300/HX5351 in action.

Philips claims that the Sonicare Essence 5300 will reduce stains from coffee and tobacco by 80% in just 4 weeks of use, which is great for the caffeine junkies like myself. It also brushes a huge 31,000 strokes per minute thanks to the powerful internal motor; I dare you to try that with a manual toothbrush!

Built into the Sonicare Essence 5300 is a smart timer which is designed to make you brush your teeth for a sufficient amount of time. It’s rather basic, but it gets the job done; it will simply shut the toothbrush off after the two minutes of cleaning are over. If you wish to brush your teeth longer, all you have to do is turn it on again, and away you go.

You’ll find that the brush heads will last about the standard 6 months before needing to be replaced. Luckily, the replacement heads are rather affordable, especially if you purchase online. As far as the battery goes, it should last you about 2 weeks before needing to be charges. Although this is generally irrelevant considering your toothbrush will usually be in the charger all day anyway, it does happen to be handy if you plan on travelling.

Another great thing, if you plan on sharing your toothbrush with another person, is that Philips color-codes their replacement heads so you can tell which is which. A very nice touch.

Of course, being a budget electric toothbrush, you’re not going to get some of the useful bells-and-whistles found on higher-end models, such as a battery indicator. We’ve also found reports that this model does produce a buzzing noise in the skull while in use, which may be a bit startling at first.

The Sonicare Essence 5300 Is Great For Kids & Smaller Mouths

We found that the 5300 is particularly good for a kids toothbrush, or for those with smaller mouths. The design is much more slender than the typical electric toothbrush, making it much easier to use in a small mouth; some of the larger electric toothbrushes can be almost impossible to use in that case. Also making it great for children is the very inexpensive price, and the built-in timer makes sure that they brush for the recommended two minutes. If your kids are like mine, they would probably be more likely to brush for 10 seconds rather than two minutes, so the timer works great for that.

What’s the Final Say on the Philips Sonicare Essence 5300/HX5351?

This is a great toothbrush for those budget-minded individuals looking for a good electric toothbrush that won’t break the bank. There’s little wonder why this is the best-selling model on Amazon, because it’s hard to beat the value you get in this little machine. If this model sounds like it would fit your needs, I’d definitely recommend it!
