Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power Toothbrush Review

Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power ToothbrushThe Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power Toothbrush is a budget electric toothbrush aimed at those that want something just a step above a regular manual toothbrush. Philips markets this electric toothbrush toward teens and preteens, giving special care toward it being safe for braces.

Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power Toothbrush Product Overview

  • Sonic toothbrush dislodges plaque not normally reachable with a manual toothbrush
  • Safe for use on braces
  • Requires 2 AA batteries (included)
  • Built-in 2-minute SmartTimer
  • 2 year warranty

The Sonicare Xtreme e3000 is a fairly basic electric toothbrush, giving way to it’s budget level price point. Unlike most of the other electric toothbrushes we’ve reviewed, this model doesn’t have a built-in rechargeable battery. It takes 2 AA batteries, which are included. Now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing; for example, if you take your toothbrush travelling or camping, you may not have electricity available to recharge a regular electric toothbrush. Since the e3000 can take regular AA batteries, there’s no worry that you’ll run out of brushing power in the middle of your trip. Also, considering the fact that some electric toothbrushes with rechargeable batteries do not allow the user to replace them, being able to simply put in new AAs is always nice. We would recommend buying a nice set of 4 rechargeable AA batteries, which in the end give you performance and convenience almost better than an electric toothbrush with a built-in battery, especially for those that travel.

The Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power Toothbrush’s Features

Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power Toothbrush vs Manual Toothbrush

The Sonicare Xtreme e3000 vs a manual toothbrush.

We were surprised to find that the Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Power Toothbrush has a built-in 2-minute timer like most of the higher-priced electric toothbrushes on the market. A brushing timer is great, because very few people find themselves brushing for the recommended 2 minutes when using a standard toothbrush, and a timer ensures that you do. Unfortunately, the e3000, being a budget model, lacks the 30-second quadrant signal that many of the other electric toothbrushes have, but it’s not hard to keep track of that in your head while you brush.

Fortunately, the Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 is compatible with the brush heads that are used with the higher-end models, which was surprising and welcome. Although it only comes with a standard brush head, you are free to purchase and use any of the available specialized heads. Just make sure that they’re the heads in the E-Series, which seem to be the compatible heads.

Unfortunately, we’ve read reports that the Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 does not have a water-tight seal around the battery compartment and will break down if you let it get wet. If you opt for this electric toothbrush, take extra precaution in not letting it get wet other than the brush head. If you let water get inside of it, the brush will cease to function eventually. If you use it normally and properly there’s no reason that you’ll get water inside the handle… just don’t brush your teeth underwater or in the shower.

Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 – How Well Does It Clean?

When it comes to the actual teeth-cleaning ability of the e3000, it’s quite adequate. It does a surprisingly good job considering its budget price point, and being compatible with the other Sonicare heads on the market, you can use it exactly how you want to. You’ll definitely get a better and cleaner (especially cleaner feeling!) mouth after using this electric toothbrush.

Conclusion… is the Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 Worth a Buy?

Let’s face it: this is a very basic electric toothbrush with a few minor perks. You don’t get the bells and whistles found in more expensive brushes. Having said that, if you just want a very basic, affordable electric toothbrush that you won’t need to take out a second mortgage for, the Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 is just the thing for you. Unfortunately, because of the reports of the battery compartment being non-water tight, you’ll need to take extra care not to get it wet. Other than that, you can’t really go wrong.

If you’ve never used an electric toothbrush before and are concerned you might not like using one, the Philips Sonicare Xtreme e3000 is a low-risk way of trying one out to see if they’re right for you.
